A UK based medical company hosts Italian undergraduate for a summer internship. The focus of the internship was on the development of web based software to aid operational demand forecasting, in order to generate quotations for e-commerce and field based sales.

Brandon Medical and The Politecnico di Torino (Polytechnic University of Turin) were introduced by the Enterprise Europe Network team at RTC North.

Brandon Medical specialises in medical lighting and healthcare devices, including the manufacture of major surgical operating theatre lighting systems.  Established in 1859, The Politecnico di Torino is Italy’s oldest technical university and offers several courses in the field of Engineering, Architecture and Industrial Design.

The organisations met during a joint meeting with the SME instrument National contact point, where Brandon Medical expressed an interest in hosting a European student for an internship.

The Enterprise Europe Network team at RTC North, assisted Brandon Medical in making contact with a student - from Politecnico di Torino - whom expressed an interest in the internship. The EEN team facilitated the formal agreements required to place the student through the Erasmus project active through the Italian University, as well as helping to develop a training programme for the student.

The internship was used to develop operational forecasting of demand, based on detailed expansion of the bill of materials (BOM) of the configured products, allowing the business to better schedule capacity and materials, in order to provide on time delivery to customers.

The student was responsible for liaising with the engineering and operations departments to understand the products and their configurations, as well as working with the software developer.
