Dogger Bank Wind Farm confirmed as the latest sponsor for STEMFest Sunderland!

12th Sep 2024

Dogger Bank Wind Farm will be sponsoring STEMFest Sunderland next month. This event, coordinated by the STEM Hub, delivered by RTC North, aims to encourage and inspire young people from local schools in STEM subjects and careers.

Held in partnership with the Foundation of Light, STEMFest will take place from 8th to 10th October at the iconic Beacon of Light in Sunderland. The lively three-day festival will welcome students aged 9-13, who will have the opportunity to explore a series of engaging STEM themed zones, focused around the region’s growing sectors, including Space, Cyber and Technology, E-Sports, Energy, and Manufacturing.

Dogger Bank Wind Farm is being developed offshore over 130km from the North East coastline and will power up to 6 million homes once complete. As part of Dogger Bank Wind Farm’s commitment to supporting local communities, £25 million will be invested during the project’s operational life to support the development of skills needed for the future of renewable energy. The project has already invested £1 million during the construction phase of the wind farm.

The project is a joint venture partnership between SSE Renewables (40%), Equinor (40%) and Vårgrønn (20%). SSE Renewables is leading on the development and construction of Dogger Bank Wind Farm, and Equinor will operate the wind farm on completion and during its expected operational life of around 35 years.

Dogger Bank aims to inspire young people to take on the green roles of the future, aligning with the STEM Hub's mission to cultivate the next generation's skills in STEM.

Kay Doragh, Community Investment Manager at Dogger Bank Wind Farm, comments “We are proud to be building the world’s largest offshore wind farm here in the North East – and even prouder to be supporting local young people to find out more about renewables, STEM and all the exciting opportunities these present for their future.”

With over 3,000 students expected to attend, the event aims to bridge the gap between education and industry, fostering connections and providing inspiration that will shape the future STEM workforce.

Claire Willis, Team Leader at the STEM Hub comments “Events like STEMFest are so important to our regions young people and their teachers.

Dogger Bank Wind Farm will be the world’s largest offshore wind farm and is based within the North East region. The young people who attend STEMFest will be inspired by all of our exhibitors showcasing a range of technologies and perhaps engaging with a future employer in the process!

Without the support of organisations like the Dogger Bank Wind Farm and all of our sponsors and exhibitors, events like this simply cannot happen. We are delighted to be working with the team to deliver our last STEMFest event of 2024 in Sunderland!”
