Reflecting on Progress: RTC North in a Changed World

15th Jul 2025

Head of Marketing, Sarah Richardson, reflects on how far RTC North has come in a rapidly changing world.

When I first joined RTC a little over seven years ago, the world felt like a different place. Brexit was still unfolding, a pandemic, digital transformation was accelerating but uneven, and the idea of remote collaboration was more novelty than norm. Fast forward to 2025, and the landscape we operate in has shifted dramatically; economically, politically, and culturally.

Marketing at RTC has changed just as profoundly in those seven years. We’ve moved from traditional, transactional approaches to building meaningful, human-centred engagement. yes its true our marketing is more data-informed but also more story-driven, focused on demonstrating impact and purpose. We’re not just promoting services we’re championing the north, sharing real stories of innovation and resilience, and making sure our clients and partners feel seen, heard, and supported in everything we do.

Reading through our latest RTC Annual Report, I’m struck by how far we’ve come not just as an organisation, but as a northern community of innovators, collaborators, and changemakers. The report doesn’t just capture a year’s worth of achievements; it reflects a mindset that’s evolved to meet the moment.

We’re not just helping businesses grow; we’re helping them grow with purpose. Whether it’s supporting SMEs in clean tech, digital health, or advanced manufacturing, our focus is on impact on unlocking leadership potential, building confidence, and creating inclusive prosperity.

One of the most powerful themes in this year’s review is the emphasis on diversity, not just in people, but in business models, sectors, and success metrics. Our commitment to inclusion also means investing in the next generation through our STEM programmes. We work with schools and young people across the north to spark curiosity, build skills, and raise aspirations in science, technology, engineering and maths. By partnering with educators and industry, we’re helping ensure that future innovators have the opportunities and confidence to thrive, strengthening the talent pipeline our economy depends on.

Just look at the Day in the Life of Josh, Education Relationships Manager, who collaborates closely with both Primary and Secondary School Teachers to advance STEM education across the North.

The report also highlights the growing strength of collaboration. The Great North partnership, for example, is more than a slogan; it’s a strategy. We’ve always believed the north is stronger together, and now we’re seeing that belief turn into action. Cross-regional working is no longer aspirational; it’s operational.

Our podcast, Northern Spotlights, is aimed at providing valuable insights and inspiration to business professionals, entrepreneurs, and anyone looking to thrive in the world of business.

In an era where knowledge-sharing and connectivity are paramount, Northern Spotlight aims to be a valuable resource for individuals seeking to navigate the complex landscape of entrepreneurship and corporate success.

And let’s not forget the global context. Trade deals with India and the US, a warming relationship with the EU, these are not just headlines; they’re opportunities. Opportunities for our clients, our partners, and our region to thrive on a broader stage.

I’m proud to help tell these stories. But more than that, I’m proud to be part of a team that lives them. To everyone at RTC North, thank you. Your creativity, resilience, and passion continue to inspire. And to our clients and partners: let’s keep building. The best is yet to come.
