STEM Net Zero: A Future Focussed Event
02nd Jul 2025
The STEM Hub, delivered by RTC North, is proud to present an exciting three-day STEM Net Zero event this July in Darlington in partnership with Teesside University and Durham University. This event will be delivered as part of the Research England Hydrogen Innovation Project (REHIP), funded by Research England.
STEM NetZero is designed to inspire the next generation of innovators and problem-solvers in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics), the event will engage over 1,000 young people aged 9 to 14 from the region. By showcasing opportunities within the renewable energy and sustainability sectors, it aims to spark enthusiasm for STEM subjects and encourage interest in future careers that will help build a more sustainable world.
17 STEM focused businesses with a strong commitment to sustainability will participate delivering fun and interactive classroom sessions that highlight the exciting career opportunities within the STEM fields. This event also offers a valuable opportunity for businesses to connect with their future workforce by showcasing their companies and career pathways.
By inspiring the next generation to pursue rewarding STEM careers, participating exhibitors will not only support local industry and commerce but also strengthen relationships with schools and the wider community.
REHIP is a pioneering collaboration between Teesside University and Durham University, aimed at catalysing the decarbonisation and advancement of hydrogen technologies in the Tees Valley.
The ambitious four-year, £11 million, initiative leverages the combined strengths of the two institutions to drive innovation, research, and capacity building in the region.
Professor Nashwan Dawood, Research Director at Teesside University’s Net Zero Industry Innovation Centre, said:
“At Teesside University, we are working with partners in academia and industry to ensure that this region is at the heart of the UK’s green industrial revolution.
“Therefore, it is vital that tomorrow’s engineers and scientists are introduced to the vast potential of sustainable technologies and the impact that they will on our lives.
“We are delighted to support this event to inspire and enthuse the young people who will be key to developing and innovating this technology.”
Dawn Ross, Partner Liaison Coordinator at the STEM Hub comments:
“STEM Net Zero is about sparking curiosity and inspiring climate action in young minds. By engaging students aged 9 to 14, we're helping them see how science, technology, engineering, and maths can shape a cleaner, greener future. This event empowers the next generation to think big, act boldly and become the problem-solvers our planet needs.”
