Book Review: Everybody Writes by Ann Handley

06th Mar 2025

Writing has always been a huge part of my professional life, but this year, it took on a whole new meaning as I became a published author for the first time. The journey from marketer to author has reinforced just how powerful words can be—not just in storytelling but in shaping ideas, influencing audiences, and connecting people in meaningful ways. That’s why Everybody Writes by Ann Handley struck such a chord with me.

As someone who has spent years crafting marketing strategies and messaging, I know that good writing isn’t just for novelists or journalists—it’s essential for anyone who communicates in the digital world. Whether you’re a business leader, a content creator, or someone who simply wants to be more engaging in emails and social media, Handley makes it clear: writing is a skill that can be honed and improved.

What I love about Everybody Writes is its practical, no-nonsense approach. Handley reminds us that writing well isn’t about being overly academic or complex—it’s about clarity, authenticity, and human connection. She breaks down the process of writing into simple, actionable tips that make it less intimidating and more accessible.

One of the biggest takeaways for me, especially as a first-time author, is Handley’s belief that writing is a muscle—one that needs regular exercise. It’s easy to fall into the trap of waiting for inspiration to strike, but the truth is, great writing comes from discipline, practice, and being willing to write badly at first. That mindset shift has been invaluable to me, both in marketing and in my own writing journey.

Another standout lesson from the book is the importance of writing with your audience in mind. Whether you’re crafting a blog post, a LinkedIn update, or even a book, Handley encourages writers to always ask: Who am I writing this for? What do they need to know? That level of intention is what transforms good content into great content—content that resonates, engages, and drives action.

As a marketer, I’ve always known the power of words. But as an author, I’ve come to appreciate them even more. Words shape ideas, inspire action, and create lasting impact. If you write—whether for work, passion, or both—Everybody Writes is a book that will help you write better, think sharper, and communicate with more confidence.

For anyone who wants to level up their writing skills, this book is a must-read. And for me, it was a timely reminder that writing isn’t just a skill—it’s a superpower.
