Championing STEM Education for Future Success

29th Apr 2024

In today's rapidly evolving world, the significance of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) education cannot be overstated. These subjects are not only the driving force behind innovation and technological advancement but also crucial to ensure that our young people have the skills they need to support business demands and have a successful career. The gap between the skills required by industries and the education provided in traditional settings remains significant. Still, I am so proud to be a central part of an organisation that not only recognises this, but champions STEM and really wants to make a difference to both our young people and our businesses.

As a leading business support organisation, we have always been at the forefront of promoting STEM education and fostering collaboration between industries and educational institutions. Our STEM Hub initiative serves as a vital link between the educational sector and the practical skills required by businesses, not only in the North East but also in the Yorkshire and Humber region.

One of our STEM Hubs' primary objectives is to ensure that what is taught in schools aligns with the evolving needs of industries. By facilitating partnerships between schools, colleges, universities, and businesses, the STEM Hub helps educators incorporate real-world applications and practical skills development into their teaching methodologies. This approach not only enhances the learning experience for students but also equips them with the skills and knowledge necessary to thrive in STEM-related careers.

The Hub also plays a central role in promoting diversity and inclusion within STEM fields. By engaging with underrepresented groups, including women and minorities, and providing access to STEM education and opportunities, the Hub creates a more inclusive and equitable workforce. Recognising the importance of diversity in driving innovation, RTC North actively supports initiatives to break down barriers and promote diversity within STEM industries.

One of our flagship events is STEMFest, an annual celebration of STEM education and innovation. STEMFest brings together students, educators, businesses, and community members to showcase the exciting possibilities within STEM fields. Through hands-on workshops, interactive exhibits, and engaging presentations, STEMFest inspires young minds and creates a passion for STEM subjects. It provides a platform for networking and collaboration, facilitating connections between students and potential employers, as well as fostering partnerships between educational institutions and businesses. We work incredibly hard to bring this event together, but it is one of the most inspiring and uplifting events in our calendar.

We all have a part to play in preparing the workforce of tomorrow and to drive economic growth and innovation. As we continue to navigate an increasingly complex and technology-driven world, investing in STEM education and working with stakeholders is critical to ensure that the supply and demand for skills matches. There are so many amazing initiatives that help do that across our entire nation, but I am incredibly proud of the role my organisation takes in driving this agenda forward and I love that every day I get to come to work to inspire the next generation of innovators and problem solvers.
